The Aranjuez City Council has launched a new campaign to intensify the control of the black fly in the Tajo River with the aim of reducing the presence of this insect whose bites «are especially painful for residents and visitors.»
This action, framed within the measures to protect the most frequented walking areas of the municipality, has been intensified in the banks of the Tajo, channels, and wet areas of the municipal area, the main breeding grounds of the black fly, as indicated by the council in a statement.

The campaign includes the application of biological larvicides such as Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti), authorized and environmentally friendly, but which has already «demonstrated its effectiveness in previous campaigns without affecting aquatic fauna.»
Thanks to these continuous interventions in recent years, a significant reduction in the presence of these diptera in the river channels of Aranjuez has been achieved, although now, with the arrival of the heat, specific actions against the black fly have been necessary.

With the arrival of the heat, the tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus), known for its aggressiveness and ability to transmit diseases like dengue, Zika, or chikungunya, once again poses a health concern in the region.
Therefore, in addition to intensifying efforts for its elimination, the municipality has activated a surveillance and control plan for this invasive species, which includes inspections and informative campaigns aimed at the public.

The tiger mosquito, easily identifiable by its white stripes on legs and body, reproduces in small containers with stagnant water, so its proliferation has been favored by the accumulation of water in common elements of patios and terraces, such as pots, plant saucers, animal drinkers, or buckets.
In this sense, the city council reminds citizens of the importance of taking preventive measures in their homes to avoid breeding grounds, such as emptying, covering, or eliminating any container that can accumulate water and changing the water in drinkers and vases at least every two days.

It is also recommended to keep gutters and drains clean and dry and to use repellents and appropriate clothing, especially at dawn and dusk, the times of greatest mosquito activity.
«Citizen collaboration is essential for the success of these campaigns,» added from the council, where they reiterate «their commitment to public health and the well-being of their residents» and thank «the involvement of the entire population in this common task of prevention and control.»
