Works for the automation of Line 6 (Circular) of Metro will begin this Saturday, May 31st, with its first phase, which will suspend service on the west arc (Moncloa-Méndez Álvaro) until September 12th, and the east arc (Moncloa-Legazpi) from September 13th to December 31st.
According to Metro de Madrid, this closure is necessary to carry out the comprehensive transformation of the infrastructure. Over 23 kilometers of track will be renewed to reduce incidents, shorten travel times, and improve the long-term reliability of the service.
Closures and affected stations
Therefore, from this Saturday until September 12th, the western section of the line will be closed, from Moncloa to Méndez Álvaro. These stations will continue to operate as the terminus of the open section.
Arganzuela-Planetario, the key station in the expansion of Metro’s Line 6
The stations where Line 6 will not run are: Argüelles, Príncipe Pío, Puerta del Ángel, Alto de Extremadura, Lucero, Laguna, Carpetana, Oporto, Opañel, Plaza Elíptica, Usera, Legazpi, and Arganzuela-Planetario. The latter will remain closed during the two phases of the works, as it will serve as a logistics coordination center.
In the second phase, from September 13th to December 31st, the eastern section of the line, from Moncloa to Legazpi, will be closed. Similarly, these stations will operate as the terminus of the open section.
The stations where Line 6 will not run during this period are: Ciudad Universitaria, Vicente Aleixandre, Guzmán el Bueno, Cuatro Caminos, Nuevos Ministerios, República Argentina, Avenida de América, Diego de León, Manuel Becerra, O’Donnell, Sainz de Baranda, Conde de Casal, Pacífico, Méndez Álvaro, and Arganzuela-Planetario.
In all cases, the stations where multiple lines pass through will remain open to provide service on lines that are not under construction. Additionally, the open section in each phase will close at midnight from Sunday to Thursday, as has been the case since March 9th on the entire line.
Alternative transportation in the first phase of works
To mitigate the impact of the project on the mobility of passengers who use the Circular for their daily commutes, the regional government has established an alternative transportation plan, with several free buses operated by the Municipal Transport Company (EMT).

In this first phase of the works, the main service will be the SE6, which will run from Méndez Álvaro to Ciudad Universitaria, replicating the affected interval of Line 6 on the surface. Its frequency, ranging from 3 to 5 minutes, will be adjusted according to demand based on the time of day.
Additionally, other shuttle buses with a shorter route have been set up to meet the needs of specific areas. The SE3 will connect Lucero with Batán and Casa de Campo on a circular route, while the SE4 will link Legazpi with Plaza Elíptica with a single stop at the Usera station.
Likewise, line 180 will be extended (Legazpi-Estación El Pozo) to have its terminus located on Cobre Street, in front of the Arganzuela-Planetario station.
60 EMT buses to cover the closure of Line 6 of Metro from June to September
Finally, to address the night closure affecting the entire line, the SEN service will be launched in the northeast arc, between Legazpi and Moncloa, operating from Sunday to Thursday between 00:00 and 02:00 hours.
