Madrid leads the ranking of communities with the most readers, with a 76.8% share, a percentage that is six points above the national average (70.3%). This is indicated by the Barometer of Reading and Book Buying Habits in Spain 2024, which confirms the population of Madrid as the most avid readers in their leisure time.
The Minister of Culture, Tourism, and Sports of the Community of Madrid, Mariano de Paco, highlighted this data during the presentation of the study and the Strategic Plan for Books and Reading in the Community of Madrid (2025-2028): #ReadMadrid.
Madrid, the community that reads the most in their leisure time (72.1%)
De Paco emphasized that 84.2% of children between 10 and 13 years old dedicate part of their free time to reading, a figure that, he assures, will continue to rise. In the case of women, the percentage goes up to 93.6%. Additionally, the study confirms that the physical format remains the favorite among Madrid readers.
Strategic plan #ReadMadrid for 2025-2028
To promote reading, the Community of Madrid will allocate over 19 million euros to this plan, which revolves around five main axes: readers, authors, books, publishers, and booksellers.
‘Books to the streets’ return to travel through the Madrid Metro
The regional government will seek to modernize bookstores, incorporating technological improvements and providing training for staff, as well as promoting the presence of booksellers at local fairs.
The plan also includes the creation of reading clubs and workshops through two campaigns: ‘Kids in the library’ and ‘Explore new destinations’, focused on promoting reading among the youth.
