Reconocimiento a atletas locales de Alcobendas

The Mayor of Alcbendas, Rocío García Alcántara, and the sports advisor, Jesús Tortosa, presented the first scholarships awarded yesterday by the local council to recognize the excellence of Alcobendense athletes.

The Mayor expressed his pride in all our local athletes, highlighting them as an excellent example of constant improvement, especially for the children and youth of Alcobedas. He emphasized, «We have brought our city to the top, and you are a fundamental part of our title as the European Sports City 2025.»

In total, 25,000 euros were allocated to seventeen individual scholarships (2 of 4,000 euros, 2 of 2,000 euros, and 13 of 1,000 euros) for residents who achieved medals in official competitions in 2024, to support their development and future in high-level sports. This financial aid aims to assist them in covering the expenses involved in their participation in national and international competitions.

The recipients include various Olympians from «Paris 24,» such as gymnast Ana Arnau; athlete Diego Méntrida (who guided José Luis García ‘Jota’ during the last Paralympics); and wheelchair basketball player from Valcudos Club, Katy Hernández. The Spanish Junior Fencing champion, Jaime del Caballo, also received a scholarship.

Upcoming Agreement with Clubs
During the scholarship award ceremony, the Mayor announced that this year, an agreement will be signed with the city’s 400 sports clubs «to ensure that the lack of economic resources is not a barrier for any child in our city to achieve their potential.»
