Semana de la Salud en Alcobendas: Prevención del ictus y más

The II Health Week was inaugurated this morning, coinciding with World Health Day, celebrated today on April 7, with a session to prevent stroke at the Pablo Iglesias Cultural Center. It is one of the main educational activities of this week for the residents, which includes a lecture, several roundtable discussions, and also blood pressure monitoring in the municipal center lobby.

The Deputy Mayor, Marta Martin, inaugurated this session attended by the ambassador of the Family Schools of the Dacer Foundation, Enrique Ruiz-Escudero, the manager of the Infanta Sofia University Hospital, Guillermo Cenal, the Councilor for Family and Social Welfare, Concha Villalon, healthcare professionals, and residents. Marta Martin emphasized that «good prevention of risk factors could prevent 90% of stroke deaths, a major public health problem.»

In Spain, there are around 120,000 strokes per year, and every 15 minutes, a person dies from this disease. In fact, it is the leading cause of disability in our country. Hence, it is crucial to recognize the symptoms of stroke: sudden vision loss, difficulty speaking, intense and sudden headache, or loss of mobility or sensitivity in a part of the body.

The Head of Neurology at Infanta Sofia Hospital, Ambrosio Miralles, explained the healthy habits and risk factors to consider in preventing stroke, the second leading cause of death worldwide and the first for women. Subsequently, in various roundtable discussions, they addressed preventing a new stroke in patients who have already experienced it and the importance of what to do after this cerebrovascular pathology and how to functionally recover the patients who have suffered from it.

35 Healthy Activities
The II Health Week started yesterday with an activity to reduce anxiety and depression and will continue until next Wednesday with 35 workshops, conferences, and medical tests to improve the quality of life for residents, all free of charge.

Highlights include early detection of visual problems and audiometry, first aid and CPR workshops, blood pressure, blood glucose, and body mass index calculation tests at various locations in the city, addiction prevention workshops for adolescents, the Stop Hypertension project, pelvic floor workshops for women, and organized visits to the Municipal Public Health Laboratory. All activities are free and can be found on alcobendas.org.

Collaborating with the Alcobendas City Council are the Infanta Sofia University Hospital, the Ministry of Health, and the Community of Madrid Transfusion Center, as well as nearly a dozen associations in our city related to health, the Official College of Pharmacists, physiotherapy clinics, optical centers, and yoga centers in the municipality.

Life expectancy in Alcobendas is approaching 85 years, ranking in the Top 5 of Spanish cities. Projections indicate that by 2050, it could exceed 90 years. Undoubtedly, an active and healthy life is essential to achieve these figures. In Alcobendas, nearly 60% of the population claims to engage in sports or physical activity at least two days a week. The goal of the Alcobendas City Council is to continue increasing the percentage of individuals aware of a healthy lifestyle so that «life expectancy is enjoyed with good health,» as emphasized by Deputy Mayor Marta Martin.
