Coordinating with the Week of Older People in Alcobendas, the Community of Madrid is celebrating the Week of Sensitization of Unwanted Loneliness.
Alcobendas has joined the network created by the Community of Madrid and, to shed light on this serious social issue, as part of the programming of the Week of Older People in Alcobendas, the exhibition Unwanted Loneliness was opened to the public at the Valdelasfuentes Sports City. The inauguration of the exhibition, which took place on Monday, May 26, was attended by the acting mayor, Marta Martín, the Councilor for Social Welfare, Concepción Villalón, and a leading figure in the fight against unwanted loneliness: Father Ángel from Mensajeros de la Paz.
«The worst disease one can have today, beyond physical ailments, is loneliness. And it cannot be fought with pills, only with company and affection,» said Father Ángel, who recently launched a foundation to address this serious social issue and, last year, promoted Ciudad Dorada, a complex of villages for older people suffering from loneliness.
The exhibition Unwanted Loneliness consists of images by eight photographers from the Contraluz Association and can be visited until this Sunday, June 1. Alongside the exhibition, the mural Once there was a Network that welcomed everyone was installed, where all visitors can write a reflection on the serious problem of unwanted loneliness.
Municipal Actions
From the City Council, through the Social Welfare delegation, actions and programs are being carried out to alleviate unwanted loneliness. Work is being done on its detection, intervention, and prevention through personal interviews, workshops, training, talks, courses, campaigns, or volunteering.
