Devoción madrileña en el Besapié de Jesús El Pobre y Besamanos del Gran Poder

As every first Friday of March, Madrid once again witnesses a manifestation of faith and fervor that unites the faithful in a tradition deeply rooted in the capital’s culture.

Just like at the Basilica of Jesús de Medinaceli, hundreds of devotees have gathered at the Iglesia de San Pedro El Viejo to venerate Jesús El Pobre, participating in the emotional besapié.

Simultaneously, at the Real Colegiata de San Isidro, the traditional besamanos to Jesús del Gran Poder has taken place. This event reflects the religiosity of the people of Madrid and marks the beginning of preparations for Holy Week, a sacred period lived with intense spirituality in the city.

Hundreds of faithful fulfill the tradition of the besapiés at the church of Jesús de Medinaceli

The tradition of the besapié and besamanos every first Friday of March has become a ritual that anticipates the arrival of Holy Week. During this time, the faithful begin to feel the penitential and reflective atmosphere that characterizes this important religious festivity. The images of both saints are venerated with deep devotion, recalling their spiritual and cultural significance.

The history of these brotherhoods is rich and meaningful. Jesús El Pobre has its roots in the early 19th century as a congregation of slaves. However, after the devastation of the Spanish Civil War, its archive was lost and was reorganized in 1940, resurging with more strength among the devotees.

The high season of torrijas kicks off at El Riojano

On the other hand, Jesús del Gran Poder also has a long history and shares with El Pobre the honor of carrying out its penitential station during the afternoon and evening of Maundy Thursday. This year, as is tradition and weather permitting, it will process through the emblematic streets of historic Madrid of the Austrias for over five hours.

As Holy Week approaches, these acts not only strengthen the bond among the people of Madrid but also reaffirm their cultural and spiritual identity. In every kiss and every prayer resonates an echo of history, faith, and community that remains alive in the heart of Madrid.
