Far from solving the situation of homeless people who have been staying overnight at the Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas airport for months, the measures taken by Aena have only served to move the problem elsewhere.
The nighttime access controls implemented by Aena at four gates of T4 during nighttime and five gates in the rest of the terminals have managed to reduce the number of homeless individuals from over 500 who were staying inside the terminals for several months to less than a hundred.
However, the unions report that around two hundred people are still staying overnight at the airport facilities. Specifically in the parking lot.
Salva’s new life: from sleeping at Barajas to finding a job in Asturias
According to several workers, some homeless individuals who couldn’t access T-4 due to the controls have moved to the parking lots, where they spend the night, except for some who sleep on benches outside the facilities.
The unions denounce that the situation of insecurity and unsanitary conditions is unsustainable and demand an urgent solution from all the involved administrations.
