Los agricultores de Titulcia lidian con la destrucción de sus cultivos.

Titulcia’s crops are in a critical situation after the recent rains that have ruined their harvests. The land, known as «the land of garlic,» now resembles a flooded landscape, with fields submerged in water over 50 centimeters deep. In a scenario where it’s pouring salt on a wound, the anguish of the farmers intensifies.

Raúl, a local farmer, expresses his frustration: «The fields are the same as they were, just with more water. Even with the rain last night, it has risen another quarter. They say about 25 liters have fallen around here.»

The situation is so severe that the path to his plot has become completely impassable. The overflow of the Tajuña River has led to this crisis. «This water comes from the river, from the reservoir that keeps releasing more water than it retains, and the river overflows,» explains Raúl.

The overflow of the Tajuña River destroys crops in Titulcia: million-dollar losses and desperation among farmers

His garlic crops have been devastated; «they are completely rotten. They’ve been soaked, covered, and cooked. It’s worthless now.» In total, approximately 50 hectares of garlic, equivalent to about 500 tons of product, have been ruined.

The barley has suffered the same fate. Raúl had 40 hectares dedicated to this crop, and he laments: «It’s already dried out, cooked, full of water. It’s worthless now, completely spoiled.» Additionally, the barley was crucial for next year’s planting: «This barley is for multiplying to make seed, and now there won’t be any for next year either.»

Storm Nuria will bring rain to Madrid until Saturday afternoon

The water accumulation in the plots is an urgent problem that seems to have no immediate solution. «I can’t do anything anymore. What’s lost is lost, there’s no remedy,» concludes Raúl resignedly.

The farmers of Titulcia are awaiting a solution to address this serious situation and prevent future catastrophes on their fertile lands. Meanwhile, the cycle of rain continues to affect those who depend on agriculture for their livelihood.
